Apartment Guide
Welcome to Brooklyn! From brownstone-lined streets to unique shops and one of New York’s best parks, Park Slope is an absolute delight.
Recently named one of the coolest streets in New York, 5th Avenue is truly one of a kind! To help make the most of your stay, here are a few helpful tidbits and things to keep in mind about the neighborhood and apartment.
#1 Locating the apartment.
The apartment is located next to the coffee shop Konditori at the cross of 5th Ave and Berkeley Pl., your home-away-from-home.
Behind the coffee shop on Berkeley Pl., you’ll see a series of recycling bins surrounded by black metal fencing. Just beyond the recycling area is the main door and entrance to the apartment complex. Access instructions to will be shared 24-hours before your arrival.
#2 Where to park.
While the unit doesn’t come equipped with a private parking spot nor garage, there is ample street parking available.
When searching for a spot, I recommend avoiding 5th or 7th Avenues, as these streets are filled with an assortment of local shops and can tend to be crowded.
#3 Entering the unit.
To unlock the door to the apartment unit, simply insert the apartment key into the bottom aperture.
Upon entry, you’ll notice that the door to the unit only opens partially due to the thickness of the living room rug. Consider this a chance to show off your strength! When you are ready to leave the unit, the door to both the unit and the building will lock automatically behind you. So make sure you have your keys!
#4 Operating the mood lights.
Being a summer solstice gal, I enjoy a bit of warmth/ambiance. To set the mood, the apartment is equipped with three sunset lamps.
The unit next to the bed can be controlled by the remote on the bedside table. The unit behind the TV is controlled by a remote located in a basket on the wooden wall divider. (Due to the placement of the light, you’ll need to reach behind the TV to turn off or switch the color using the remote.) The unit in the kitchen does not have any advance features, and can be shut off manually via the unit’s switch.
#5 Embracing maximal decor.
The apartment features a maximalist decor style that embraces lots of items,
textures, prints and patterns.
I love to travel and experience different cultures, and my space is a reflection of such. The decor is a bit excessive, but also lovingly and intentionally curated. The space is also my secondary home, and there are a few personal belongings in various areas that I hope you’ll only admire. If you could refrain from using any jewelry, kick-knacks, or apparel that your eyes will feast on (and may fancy),
I’d be so very grateful!
#6 Storing your luggage and belongings.
Space has been cleared from the closet behind the bed for you to store luggage and hang clothing.
There is a wicker basket on far right floor of the closet that you can use as a hamper throughout your stay. When your trip is sadly coming to an end, if you could place any used towels in the hamper so the cleaning team can easily reset items for future guests, that would be wonderful. No need to strip the bedding. We’ll take care of that for you!
#7 Trash and recycling.
When it comes to trash/recycling, you’ll notice there is no primary waste bin inside the unit.
Being the on-the-go nature of city living, most New York units don’t come equipped with large waste canisters. I’d suggest using a small plastic bag as a daily receptacle. And as you naturally come and go throughout your stay, simply take the bag with you and dispose of it each time you leave the unit. Plastic bags are located under the sink for ease of use.
#8 Tending to the plants.
As you may notice, I’m a proud plant mom. I used to describe my space as a urban jungalow, adding a little life to the space and bringing the outdoors in.
To make it easier on guest, I’ve greatly reduced the number of houseplants in the space. But I did manage to keep a few favorites! To ensure the plants happy and hydrated, try to water the plants once over the course of your stay. There aren’t any specific rules on how much water to give each variety, so use your best judgement. You’ll do great! But if you have questions, I’m more than happy to help.
#9 Practice patience around plumbing.
Due to the historic nature and age of many of the lovely brownstones in Park Slope, plumbing works like an old trusty steed. It’s a bit slow but rest assured it’s reliable.
That said, you may need to flush the toilet twice at times, or jiggle the handle if water in the tank continues to run. Also, the base of the bathtub has some age-related discoloration on the original finish, but I assure you that it’s as clean as can be. The property management team makes sure extra elbow grease is used after each stay to re-prep the area. Oh, the joys of aging.
#10 Imperfections will need to be embraced.
One of the joys of staying in a historic NYC brownstone is experiencing its original charm. And yes, that includes a few perfectly imperfect details.
Throughout the apartment, you’ll notice that several original fixtures that have aged over time. This includes chips to the surface coating in the microwave and shelving behind the bathroom mirror, porcelain discoloration in the tub, maturity of decorative pieces, ware on the kitchen countertop, and such. These elements are part of the apartment’s story and reflect lived-in generational charm. Know that they are purely cosmetic, and the space will be professionally cleaned for your comfort.
#11 Where to grab groceries and goodies.
Help yourself to a variety of pots, pans, oils and spices. The unit has a stove, an oven and a small fridge and freezer for you to store fresh produce.
If you enjoy cooking, I recommend visiting Associated Market located one block away. It’s an affordable, well-stocked grocery store that should have common staples. For fast snacks, grilled sandwiches and the most insane ice cream selection, check out 5th Ave Market located right across the street. Best of all, they’re open 24 hours, seven days a week!
